Send Me Your Ideas (and Encouragement)

Hey Friends! As I mentioned in my post a while back, my life has changed drastically in the past year--I'm now living and working in Yosemite National Park. When I first arrived here, my lifestyle wouldn't really have allowed me to make efforts to be environmentally-conscious (it's a long story), but now I am staying in a lovely apartment where I can live like a regular person again.

This means it's time to get back to being eco-friendly. But where to start? I don't think I can go back to giving up plastic entirely, but I know it's time to cut back. I also want to reduce the waste I produce generally, including plastic, and cut down on how much meat I'm eat.

But what do you recommend? What should be some first steps as I get back on the bandwagon?

You could do with a share widget.

Living and working in Yosemite. Wauw, I'm jealous! What's your job? Are you a ranger?
I remember from my trip a few years ago how visitors were encouraged to take home the garbage they brought into the parc, but maybe you could start a campaign in Yosemite on trying not to bring too much/any plastic in to start with. You could use your previous experience as an example on how to do this.

Re-saar-cle, thanks for your comment! I actually work for the company that runs the hotels and restaurants here in Yosemite. So not a ranger, but it's still a pretty good gig. It's kind of interesting, but the company I work for is actually very pro-environment and does lots of things that are really great. We have a huge composting program, and do thinks like don't distribute plastic drink lids or straws. It's pretty cool. As for what I can do, I'm on the Green Team here, so I'm hoping to contribute through that :)

Hi Carl, I just attempted to add share buttons. Hopefully they'll be working shortly. Thanks!

I have a stumper for you. Is there either a good DIY recipe for dish soap that doesn't rely on plastic bottles for its ingredients and still works in hard water? Or how about a refill service that you can find locally? I am trying Fillaree, because no refill stations in the remote part of the world where I live, but I still pay for its transportation cost. Don't know how that stacks up to dish soap for the rest of the world. Would love to know if your research turns up something different.
