Out of the Closet

My sister keeps asking me when I'm going to come out of the closet. Sorry. No. It's not that kind of closet. It's my plastic closet--a closet I'm in because I've been hiding my little plastic-free experiment from my co-workers all this time.

Well, guess what. The other day, one of my co-workers came up to me and said, "Um, were you in Time Magazine?" Oh my God, I can't explain to you the way my heart jumped in my chest when she said that. It was crazy. I think I started sweating. I definitely couldn't breathe.

But after I caught my breath and dabbed the sweat off my brow (just kidding, I almost never sweat), she and I started chatting about the article and she was SO NICE about my blog and what I'm doing. She was so incredibly supportive that it made me want to cry.

Since this initial confession, I've now told five or six of my co-workers know about my blog and my plastic-free-ness, and I'm sure many others are about to find out or have already heard about it through the grapevine.

So I guess I'm out of the closet.

But now I have a problem. It's going to be weird to talk about my bathing habits and other personal junk now that my co-workers might be reading along.

Oh, well. I guess I'll just have to get over it.

Excellent! Don't you feel more free now? :)

You're finally out of the plastic closet ?!? I am so happy that your co-worker was supportive!!

The anonymity of the internet does (or did) allow you to put all of your thoughts and feelings out there without feeling judged. I don't think you have much to worry about since your goals sound a little strange only initally; once you discuss them with someone, everything makes sense.

However, maybe it would be TMI to write that one post we talked about. Lol!

I am trying to go plastic-free, too. You are not alone and I am so grateful for your blog!

This concept of your blog is so nice. This is the very first time I came across your blog.

Anyway, with regards to this topic, secrets in time can really be opened one way or another.

Kudos to this concept.

You mean you DON'T want your coworkers checking your hair for grease tracks and giving you a permanent wide radius?!

Yeah, I don't talk about simplifying on the cleaning products either because it's easier not to draw attention to it. No one will assume you're dirty if they're not looking for it. The one day I sweat through my shirt will be the day they blame it on my lack of commercial product.

With my close co-workers, I tell them about my "greening" habits. They've turned it into kind of a joke, but some of them are actually trying some of my tips. You never know, you could get quite a following at work.
I sorta know what you mean. I'm sure my neighbors have no clue that I've done no poo, no longer use bleach, clean with vinegar, and make my own laundry detergent. And they might notice that we have way less trash even though there are 3 more people in this house. But they know I'm a little different because I have been fighting my lawn with a push reel mower. And honestly it looks like the lawn is beating me down.

Um, hear ya! It kinda freaked me out when I found out people I know in real time have Googled me me to read tidbits. Especially since I've posted about cloth pads, line drying, only buying used, deodorant stones, etc. When I've gotten asked a question in real time it kinda freaks me out! Um, somebody I work with is analyzing my pads! I wound up taking in displays for people to ooh and ahh over.

I've totally gotta admire Beth at FPF- - she is the Queen of opening the floor for discussion when she brought lubricants into the discussion. Now THAT is brave. My kahoona baby convos pale in comparison.

Just be yourself, out and proud. Your blog rocks!!!

I definitely know how you feel. I went no 'poo 4 weeks ago today! But now some of my friends have discovered my blog and I'm sort of embarrassed to write anything more about it. How sad it that?

Don't worry, I will post about. I feel like the world has to know that the world can't tell between a shampooed head and a healthy no 'poo head!

Hi! I read that article in Time and thought I'd come here to check out your pages. I am usually a food-blogger, and actively participate in discussions within a large circle of Desi-(Indian) food-bloggers. Besides healthy cuisine, we touch on the subject of green and/or safe living quite often, and also enjoy talking about differences between the West and the East on things like consumption, recycling, reusability, etc. So...you are not weird! You are keenly aware I think! Nice going...

I had a similar reaction when checking my google analytics and discovered several visits from my hometown. Freaked me out a bit! Will they figure it out by the pictures or something I say? I don't know, but now I am a little more apprehensive to post about certain topics. Nobody knows I have a blog.

Congrats on going plastic-less! I, too, am trying to go that route...awfully hard in some areas as we are a plastic society...even in our makeup! We will just have to keep getting the word out for our health and environmental well-being.

I hope you will visit my related IdeasforGoingGreen

I think you'll like it.
