Seasoned Popcorn: A Plastic-Free Party Snack

To maintain my status as a good party guest at this year's Superbowl party, I knew I needed to bring along a tasty snack, but, of course, the snack had to be plastic-free. I thought this might be a problem since I knew I wouldn't have much time to cook or bake on this afternoon.

Solution: Seasoned Popcorn!

I grew up eating plastic-free popcorn made right on the stove-top, courtesy of my Dad. It was always delicious, and with a little dressing up, I knew it could be a good snack for the football fiesta.

And I was right. The spicy and savory concoction I put together was quite tasty.

How to Make Wonderful Seasoned Popcorn

I used the recipe for Emily's Famous Popcorn, found on, and made a few changes. It took about 10 minutes to make.

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3/4 cup unpopped popcorn
  • 1/4 cup nutritional yeast
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  1. Thinly coat the bottom of a large saucepan or soup pot with oil.
  2. Add kernels, place a lid on the pan, and heat over medium-high heat.
  3. Shake to coat the kernels with oil.
  4. When the corn starts to pop, shake the pan constantly until the popping stops.
  5. Remove from heat, and pour popped corn into a large brown paper bag.
  6. Sprinkle the popcorn with yeast, chili powder, cumin and salt. Then shake the brown paper bag until the seasonings coat the corn.
And there you have it. A party snack that's quick, easy, and totally yummy. Enjoy!

Sounds yum,
Thanks for commenting on my blog ! Your blog is going to be a great source of inspiration to me. Rhonda Jean at started the 3 Gifts Challenge that I am a part of. Many of the participants have chosen to reduce plastic use. I am a meer beginner at reducing my usage, the amount of plastic that comes along with everything I usually buy is quite incredible, now that I'm actually taking notice ! Found your blog the other day and love it - thankyou

MMM! There is nothing better than fresh stove-popped popcorn, either. We make it at least once a week from our stash of farmer's market popcorn. YUMMY!
I'm going to have to try your seasoning recipe.

Your blog was made me think back to being a little kid! I loved it when dad made popcorn!

But it wasn't plastic free back then because it was never bought in bulk. So way to go on taking things a step further!

If I didn't just get braces, I would be making your recipe right now. Sounds tasty!

Ah, your right. 'Twasn't totally plastic-free since the kernels came in a bag. Still, it's so simple to make it plastic free when you cook it on the stove that it allllmost is, right? ;)

Dad told me about your braces. The pain should go away in a few days. Until then, just enjoy yourself and eat some ice cream...

So funny - before I read this, I just commented to my boyfriend, "I don't know how I lived most of my life not knowing how much better stovetop popcorn is than microwave popcorn." Your recipe is almost exactly the popcorn I just made tonight - popcorn bought in bulk, cooked up on the stovetop, and seasoned with nutritional yeast, salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper. My boyfriend and I love it - it's the one snack food we eat in our home since we don't generally buy processed food and that includes chips/crackers/etc.
