OMG, I'm So Happy

Okay, I just washed my hair with baking soda and used a solid conditioner bar from Lush called Jungle, and am about to cry tears of joy because my hair is so absolutely and completely AMAZING because of it.

Now, don't get me wrong, the vinegar rinse conditioner still works quite nicely, but ever since I ran out of regular shampoo, my hair has been a little down in the dumps. Kind of depressed. Moody. Ya know.

But now I think my hair and I have found the secret. Yes, we have found the key to all wisdom and happiness in life: the magical baking soda shampoo and Lush conditioner bar combination!

I think this development merits a little singing.

i have also been trying out homemade beauty products. recipes i use are from the book natural beauty at home. so far i have tried some facial cleansers and scrubs. as my conventional ones run out i am moving towards ones i can make and store at home in reused glass bottles and jars!

I'm not so sure about baking soda on color treated haair but I'd like to try the conditioner bar. Where does one buy it?

Amanda, Sounds awesome! It really blows me away when I make and then use natural beauty products and they work so well. It's so wonderful to make products for yourself that are so much cheaper and so very much better for the environment. Ha ha corporate beauty product companies. We are discovering what you never wanted us to know!

The Min, You can get conditioner bars at Lush, but you have to buy them in person to avoid plastic packaging. When they send them in the mail, I've read that they wrap everything in plastic.

Em, Matt smelled my hair and said it smelled like natural fragances or essential oils or something (Did he mean that I smelled like a hippie? Not sure)

I've ordered from Lush North America and it must be noted: everything arrives wrapped in plastic and nestled in styrofoam. Plus, the orders are shipped from Canada (where Lush NA products are manufactured) so the products rack up a great deal of mileage no matter where in the US you buy them from.

I'm glad you've had success with Lush's conditioner bar (though I prefer your vinegar rinse, myself). I bought the shampoo bar in 'New!' and didn't have so much luck; it contains the highly irritating clove and cinnamon essential oils and gave me hives on my skin and weeping sores on my scalp. Perhaps I'll just try baking soda.

I have to confess that I'm still on the fence about the vinegar rinse. It makes my hair soft but my hair is extra frizzy after using it. I also find that although I can't smell the vinegar once my hair dries, if it gets wet again (either in rain or from a sweaty workout) it smells like vinegar again. I'm NOT the most popular girl in jujitsu class! I find Lush products to have too much fragrance for me. Do they make any unscented products? I'm ashamed to say I have been buying shampoo/conditioner by Giovanni which uses organic ingredients but is pricey and comes in plastic bottles.

I use recipes from "Better Home Basics" but the conditioner bar sounds like a good idea. I wonder if I could make it at home..

I like Burt's Rosemary Mint Shampoo bar. It does not dry out my hair or mess with the color. I find I don't even need conditioner anymore. If you order from drugstore.com they send it sans plastic. (They will shrink wrap household cleaning products, but not cosmetics.) Just send a note with your order that you don't want any bubble packaging in the box either.

I would have loved to try this, but unlike some of the other Lush products, it still contains SLS.

I'm also using vinegar rinse, and have tried orange juice, but have never tried the baking soda wash. How do you use it?

Btw, our local co-op sells some shampoos and conditioners in the bulk area (I think one of them is Giovanni?), so that you could just bring your own containers for refill.

I work for LUSH, they make amazing shampoo bars(pucks) with no plastic packaging (as with many other items we sell) I use them everyday! They work wonders on my hair and tend to last longer then 1 or 2 bottles of traditonal shampoo. I also wanted to add the all but one of the shampoo pucks are preservative and SLS free as well.
Lush does have plastic pots that they use for other items (all are made from recycled plastic)But if you are trying to live a plastic free life LUSH has lots to offer!
Face wash-handmade soap-conditioner-shampoo-bath bombs-bubble bar are just to name a few that are package free.
I would recommend going into a local lush store to purchase them becaouse if you order them through the mail they will be rapped in plastic or paper..
I realize LUSH is not in every city so find one near to someone you know and have them go in and pick stuff up and ship it to you! Not only will the shipping be cheaper but you can make sure no plastic!!
I also wanted to add that although LUSH is not perfect when it comes to the enviroment they do strive to be and constantly make changes and improvements to be greener for the earth and it's customers.
LUSH has been around for many many years (even before the whole living green craze started)and has been working towards a greener life for all since day one.
