Oh, by the way, Evert-Fresh bags are made from plastic, as I suspected. This was confirmed by a contact at Reusablebags.com, but she didn't know what kind of plastic. She gave me the e-mail address of the manufacterer, so I will follow up. She thinks they are recyclable, but I would be willing to bet that they are not based on the information I learned this weekend and the recycling facility.
